Therapy

Rehabilitation services are provided to assist the patient in their recovery from illness or surgery which may have left them debilitated and unable to safely perform daily activities.  Visits are usually provided 2-3 times weekly but may be provided daily if a patient chooses and qualifies for homecare rather than inpatient rehabilitation. 

Physical Therapy
The physical therapist evaluates you extensively for muscle tone, the ability to ambulate or move, and muscle strength and coordination. They can help you relearn a motion or movement, regain use of a limb or appendage, or regain strength and endurance. The physical therapist will function as your case manager if you do not need nursing.

Physical therapy services may be indicated for the following reasons:

  • Impaired mobility
  • Safety issues
  • Frequent falls
  • Weakness, general or specific
  • Impaired balance
  • Decreased, limited or potential for loss of range of motion
  • Neurological deficits
  • Positioning issues related to potential for skin breakdown
  • Post operative after orthopedic or general surgery
  • Set up customized home exercise program

Occupational Therapy
The occupational therapist provides therapy focusing on the physical retraining of the upper extremities and on cognitive, perceptual, and swallowing deficits that influence the ability to eat or perform functional tasks. The therapist also makes recommendations for splinting and the use of self-care devices that allow independence.
Occupational therapy services may be indicated for the following reasons:

  • Impaired performance of activities of daily living
  • Visual/perceptual deficits
  • Cognitive/manual deficits with self care tasks
  • Therapeutic adaptive/assistive equipment
  • Neurological deficits
  • Safety issues
  • Impaired balance
  • Upper extremity limitations
  • Caregiver instruction and supervision

Speech Language Pathology

The speech language pathologist has specialized training in evaluating motor-speech skills, ability to swallow, speaking and comprehending language, memory, concentration, attention span, hearing, writing and reading. The speech therapist provides instruction, makes recommendations and carries out the actual training or teaching of the skills necessary to communicate or swallow.

Speech language pathology services may be indicated for the following reasons:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Speech problems such as word retrieval, jargon or slurred speech
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Difficulty with oral-motor coordination
  • Poor attention/concentration
  • Memory problems
  • Difficulty understanding others
  • Difficulty with reading comprehension, writing, organization of thoughts
